Taste Week in French elementary school
In October, students participate in a uniquely French cultural experience at school: tasting, learning and having fun with food during “La Semaine Du Goût” (Taste Week). As part of this event, Mrs. Chapelet, teacher of the second grade class at “Joliot Curie” elementary school in Harnes (Northern France), organized an activity around the theme of a balanced breakfast. This national week, sponsored by the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, aims to raise children’s awareness of the importance of food diversity and quality.
Tasty butter for the
"Semaine du Goût"
For the occasion, we were pleased to participate by providing butter, an must-have ingredient for the preparation of the various recipes created in class.
During this activity, the boys and girls worked on a simple recipe that dived them into a world of tasty and educational discoveries. By weighing the ingredients, they were able to review numbers, in particular those up to 200, a good exercise to deal with their knowledge of numbering system in depth, which in their level goes up to 1000. In this way, the children practiced mathematical concepts in a concrete and funny way. They also manipulated ingredients and kitchen tools, enriching their vocabulary with specific terms such as “cul de poule” for the mixing bowl, “maryse” for the flexible spatula, and of course each ingredient making up the recipe.
Finally, this culinary workshop was a wonderful opportunity for the students to develop their curiosity about food and learn about the benefits of a balanced breakfast.
The enthusiasm was obvious, and each child was able to share this yummy experience with his or her family back home.
This educational activity fits in perfectly with the objectives of La Semaine Du Goût, encouraging cooperation between players in the food industry, teachers and families to promote better food education from an early age.
